Who it is for

Foundation

Use a field map, one worked scenario and explicit state vocabulary before independent construction.

Repair

Identify the failed evidence dimension, use the smallest mutated fixture and rerun only the affected gate.

Experienced

Compress definitions; require trade-off defense, counterexample analysis and changed-context transfer.

Prerequisites

An export can succeed while the asset is still not deliverable

A final asset looks correct in Blender. It must ship to a realtime web viewer and remain exchangeable with another DCC environment. The first GLB loads, but texture memory exceeds the target budget, one material depends on an extension the web consumer does not support, and a node transform changes after a round trip. If your acceptance rule is only “export succeeded,” the asset appears done. If your rule is a delivery contract, three decisive gates are still open.

In this lesson you will build 3D Delivery Budget and Interoperability Validation Pack v1. The pack makes the target runtime, format/version, units and coordinate convention, geometry/texture/material/primitive budgets, LOD and compression policy, animation requirements, transform/material checks, extension support, downstream behavior, round-trip evidence, quality delta, provenance, and final state visible before acceptance.

The goal is not to make an asset as small as possible. The goal is to make it consumable by a declared target, inside declared budgets, while preserving the quality and semantics that target actually requires.

glTF 2.0 is the main runtime-delivery example here. Khronos describes glTF as a compact, extensible runtime 3D asset delivery format, and its current registry continues to identify 2.0 as the current major version. An extension existing in the registry does not mean every consumer implements it. For DCC/film-oriented interchange, OpenUSD publishes specifications including USD Core, UsdPreviewSurface, and USDZ. These facts help you choose and test a path; they do not constitute interoperability proof by themselves. [GLTFSPEC] [GLTFREGISTRY] [OPENUSD]

Lesson artifact: an auditable pack whose result is no stronger than INTEROPERABLE, INTEROPERABLE_WITH_KNOWN_DIFFERENCES, TARGET_SPECIFIC, REWORK_REQUIRED, HOLD, EVIDENCE_INCOMPLETE, PROVENANCE_UNKNOWN, or METHOD_UNSUITABLE.

Planned active time: 60 minutes.

Scope boundary: D3D-004 owns final asset optimization and interoperability evidence. It does not reteach the production-modeling outcome of D3D-001 or the reconstruction-method comparison owned by D3D-003.

Hard prerequisite — D3D-001

You must be able to carry forward this boundary: a convincing viewport result does not replace evidence about scale, transforms, topology intent, normals, naming, geometry statistics, and known limitations. If that boundary is not secure, rebuild equivalent prerequisite evidence first. This lesson never assumes or fabricates prerequisite completion.

Probe: a mesh looks excellent, but its unit scale is undocumented and object transforms have not been verified. Can it enter a positive delivery decision solely because the render is good? A passing answer says no and names the missing source-asset evidence.

Soft prerequisite — D3D-003

If the source came from photogrammetry, NeRF, or 3D Gaussian Splatting, distinguish a scene representation from a delivery asset. Strong novel-view rendering does not automatically prove editable mesh semantics, metric scale, or target-compatible materials. If that distinction is fragile, record the source representation, conversions, geometry/scale evidence, and provenance before optimization.

Choose your route

Answer four questions before reading on:

  1. Is an asset “optimized” when it meets the triangle limit but uses twice the target texture-memory budget?
  2. Does a syntactically valid glTF prove interoperability if it requires an extension the target viewer does not implement?
  3. If the target viewer looks correct but a node transform changes after round-trip, which claim must remain open?
  4. If the target changes from realtime web delivery to an offline USD-centric film pipeline, should you copy the same triangle budget and format decision?

4/4 → Fast Path. 2–3/4 → Repair only the weak distinction. 0–1/4 → Foundation Path. The evidence bar is identical for every route.

Route self-check: score one point only if your answer includes the stated distinction: 1) No — every declared budget matters, not only triangles. 2) No — syntactic validity and target capability support are different claims. 3) The positive interoperability claim remains open until transform drift is resolved. 4) No — a changed target requires rebuilt budgets and format/validation gates. This self-check routes support; it does not reveal the lab verdict.

Mental model: interoperability is a sequence of gates

Use this order:

delivery target → measurable budgets → geometry/texture/material optimization → explicit format + extensions → downstream validation → round-trip + quality delta → unsupported/changed-feature disclosure → bounded final state

Order matters. Optimizing before you know the target can delete information you later discover was required. Picking a format because it is familiar can hide a capability mismatch. Comparing only screenshots can miss unit or transform drift.

Keep three evidence families separate:

Evidence familyQuestionTypical fields
BudgetDoes the asset fit the target envelope?triangles, vertices, texture memory, materials, primitives
Semantic/interchangeDid required meaning survive the boundary?units, transforms, materials, animation, extensions
Quality/provenanceIs loss bounded and is the asset legitimate to use?quality delta, known differences, provenance

Do not collapse these into an unexplained weighted score. One critical failed gate can block a positive state.

Four foundations

1. Target-first budgets

“Low poly,” “lightweight,” and “web-ready” are not budgets. A useful budget is tied to a target and a measurement: maximum triangles, texture memory, material count, draw primitives, and a bounded quality delta. The numbers in this lesson's lab are fixture-specific, not universal web or glTF limits.

2. Optimization is a constrained transformation

Every optimization should answer three questions: what cost decreased, what evidence shows the target envelope improved, and what check shows required quality/semantics survived? A smaller file that breaks a normal map, rig, silhouette, or material behavior is not a successful optimization.

3. Interoperability is downstream evidence

Export is an event; interoperability is a claim. A file may be valid, load successfully, and still fail target behavior. glTF can carry meshes, materials, transforms, animation, and extension-defined capabilities, but consumers can differ in supported extensions and rendering behavior. Keep valid, loads, and works within the declared target contract as separate statements. [GLTFSPEC] [GLTFREGISTRY]

4. Known differences and provenance

Sometimes a portable result requires an explicit approximation or variant. A clearcoat may be baked or simplified, a custom shader may be removed, or a target-specific asset may be generated. Such differences must be named and accepted, not hidden. Provenance must also be explicit: synthetic, self-created, public-domain, or rights-cleared. AI may not infer ownership or permission.

Building the delivery and interoperability pack

Step 1 — Write the delivery target before choosing the format

Record a target name/version or capability profile, realtime versus offline use, relevant device class, rendering/material constraints, animation needs, memory/performance envelope, and the downstream tools/runtimes that must actually consume the asset. If the consumer is not clear, a format decision is premature.

Step 2 — Make geometry budgets measurable

Store budget and observed values separately. Triangle count is not a substitute for topology quality—the modeling outcome remains outside this lesson—but delivery still needs a bounded geometry envelope. Reduction strategies can include removal of invisible geometry, controlled simplification, target-specific variants, or an LOD policy. Do not present a runtime-specific LOD mechanism as a core format guarantee.

Step 3 — Treat texture memory as evidence, not a resolution slogan

Resolution alone does not determine memory cost. Texture count, channels, representation, compression, and mip behavior matter. In the lab, memory observations are supplied so the decision is deterministic. In a production pipeline, record the measurement method. Any reduction must be paired with material validation and a quality-delta check.

Step 4 — Count materials and draw primitives

Material and primitive count can matter to both runtime cost and portability. Blindly merging them can damage editability or semantics. Keep the before/after mapping when consolidation is part of the optimization recipe.

Step 5 — Declare units, coordinate conventions, and transforms

A round trip is more than reopening the exported file. Pick stable nodes/objects and compare position, rotation, scale, or matrices before and after the defined path. The tolerance belongs to the project and must be written in the pack. For auditability, record transform_tolerance, transform_observation_ref, and transform_delta_observed separately. A transform outside tolerance blocks a positive state until the drift is understood and repaired.

Step 6 — Record format and extensions at two levels

For glTF, record the core format version and the extensions used/required by the asset. Khronos maintains an extension registry covering material, compression, and other capabilities. Record used_extensions, required_extensions, and target_supported_extensions separately. If an extension is required by the asset but absent from the target capability profile, INTEROPERABLE is not defensible. Repair, create a target-specific variant, change the target, or keep a non-success state until the hard gate passes. [GLTFREGISTRY]

For OpenUSD, do not replace testing with the sentence “USD supports interchange.” Bind required pipeline behavior to the relevant composition/material/package expectations. UsdPreviewSurface is intentionally a preview/interchange surface rather than a promise to preserve every authoring shader, and USDZ has its own packaging constraints. [OPENUSD]

Step 7 — Separate downstream validation from round-trip validation

downstream_viewer_check asks whether the intended consumer behaves correctly. round_trip_check asks whether important semantic fields survive the defined conversion path within tolerance. One can pass while the other fails.

Step 8 — Keep quality delta next to cost reduction

Every optimization needs a baseline and an optimized observation. Depending on the project, quality evidence may be silhouette error, image comparison, normal/material deltas, animation deviation, or a defined human review rubric. The lab uses a fixture-specific percentage only to make the exercise inspectable; it is not a universal 3D quality metric.

Step 9 — Apply one deterministic primary-state precedence

Use the first matching rule below. This makes the same visible evidence map to one canonical primary state instead of several overlapping labels.

  1. METHOD_UNSUITABLE — an explicit method/path limitation means the declared constraints cannot be satisfied by the chosen approach.
  2. PROVENANCE_UNKNOWN — release-relevant provenance is unresolved.
  3. HOLD — an external decision/approval is pending, including a bounded known difference that has not been explicitly accepted.
  4. EVIDENCE_INCOMPLETE — decisive technical evidence is missing or invalid and no higher-priority condition applies.
  5. REWORK_REQUIRED — decisive evidence is present and a repairable budget/support/validation gate fails.
  6. TARGET_SPECIFIC — hard gates pass, but an explicit target-specific constraint intentionally limits portability.
  7. INTEROPERABLE_WITH_KNOWN_DIFFERENCES — hard gates pass and at least one bounded difference is recorded with description, impact, acceptance_status=ACCEPTED, and acceptance_ref.
  8. INTEROPERABLE — hard gates pass with no unresolved/accepted known difference and no target-specific portability constraint.

If more than one condition is visible, the earlier rule wins. AI may organize fields and run deterministic consistency checks. It may not invent measurements, rights, consumer support, or human acceptance.

Worked example: three failed gates behind a successful load

The worked negative case is the synthetic fixture worked_example_three_failures.json (separate from the clean mutation baseline). Its target limits are 120k triangles, 100k vertices, 64 MiB texture memory, 12 materials, 18 draw primitives, and a fixture-specific maximum quality delta of 2%. The target supports KHR_draco_mesh_compression but not KHR_materials_clearcoat. The complete 16-field projection is also provided as D3D-004-T1.

Use the complete evidence table D3D-004-T1; it includes target, format/version, units, coordinate convention, tris/verts, texture memory, materials/primitives, LOD, compression/extensions, animation/skin/morph, unsupported features, downstream, round trip, quality delta, provenance, and state.

The file loaded, but the bounded decision is at least REWORK_REQUIRED. The three problems need separate repair evidence: reduce texture memory without exceeding the quality boundary, replace/approximate or variant the unsupported material feature, and fix the transform drift.

Suppose a revised asset measures 58 MiB, has no unsupported required extension, passes round-trip, and measures 1.6% quality delta. If clearcoat was deliberately approximated, record the bounded difference with its impact plus a human acceptance_ref. Only an explicitly ACCEPTED record can support INTEROPERABLE_WITH_KNOWN_DIFFERENCES; while acceptance is pending, the precedence yields HOLD.

The numeric limits above are the lab contract—not a Khronos, Blender, or universal web standard.

Five failure patterns

1. “It opened, so it interoperates.”

Parsing/loading can succeed while material, animation, unit, or transform semantics fail. Repair: separate capability, downstream behavior, and round-trip evidence.

2. One triangle budget for every asset

Film, mobile AR, and web viewers do not share one performance envelope. Repair: derive the budget from the target, not from a remembered industry number.

3. A ratified extension must be supported everywhere

Registry status says something about the extension, not every consumer. Repair: keep target support as an independent evidence field. [GLTFREGISTRY]

4. Optimization equals smaller file size

A smaller file can still use too much runtime texture memory or damage quality. Repair: pair each cost reduction with target and quality/semantic checks.

5. Choosing glTF or USD settles interoperability

Formats have different roles and consumer support remains decisive. Repair: choose after the use case and disclose unsupported features.

Experienced bridge: one source, multiple delivery variants

A mature pipeline may keep one high-fidelity source and generate web, mobile, desktop-realtime, and DCC-interchange variants. Treating one delivery variant as the source of truth and repeatedly converting from it adds drift and makes provenance harder to reason about.

Prefer a bounded pattern:

  1. lock source-of-truth identity and provenance;
  2. define an independent delivery contract for each target;
  3. version the optimization recipe and tool baseline;
  4. validate each variant against its own consumer;
  5. record target-specific differences explicitly;
  6. requalify affected variants when the source changes.

In this model, an interoperability claim is always relative to a named target and version—not to “all 3D software.”

Format trade-offs: glTF, OpenUSD, or multiple variants

glTF is designed for runtime 3D asset delivery and provides core scene/mesh/material/transform/animation semantics plus an extension mechanism. It is often relevant to realtime/web delivery, but target extension and renderer support still require evidence. [GLTFSPEC] [GLTFREGISTRY]

OpenUSD provides rich scene-description, composition, and interchange capabilities used in DCC/film pipelines. Its official specification set includes USD Core, UsdPreviewSurface, and USDZ. Those capabilities do not imply that every consumer supports every USD feature. [OPENUSD]

A multi-format pipeline can keep USD-like interchange upstream and glTF-like runtime delivery downstream. That can be appropriate, but it adds mapping rules, conversion gates, and revalidation cost. Each conversion boundary needs its own evidence.

There is no permanent winning format. Bind the choice to target runtime, editability, composition, material fidelity, animation requirements, and tool support.

Guided and independent practice

Guided case — baseline web delivery

Open the lab through the stable reference lab://D3D-004/D3D-004-LAB1. Inside the learner guide, use fixtures/baseline_observations.json, copy evidence/evidence_pack.template.json, and populate it only from visible evidence. If a decisive value is absent, do not invent it—list it under missing_decisive_evidence and apply the published primary-state precedence.

Run:

python run_checks.py evidence/my_pack.json

The checker does not establish whether your observations are true and does not approve the asset. It deterministically checks schema/range consistency and whether your declared primary state follows the published visible-evidence precedence.

Mutation 1 — cut the budget

Use the mutation fixture where triangle and texture-memory limits are halved. Recompute the decision from the changed constraints. Name the invalidated fields, the minimum repair, and any quality evidence that must be rerun.

Mutation 2 — unsupported material extension

The asset now requires KHR_materials_clearcoat, while the target capability profile does not list it. Choose a repair, target-specific variant, or bounded non-success state and justify it. Ratification does not equal target support.

Mutation 3 — round-trip semantic drift

Use mutation_roundtrip_semantic_drift.json: the target load still succeeds, but a stable-node transform changes beyond tolerance after round-trip. Recompute the state and name the evidence that must be rerun after repair.

Independent transfer — offline USD-centric film pipeline

The second asset has no realtime triangle ceiling but has strict composition/material interchange requirements. Rebuild the gates from the new target. Do not carry the realtime web budget forward merely because it was present in the baseline.

Evidence-pack readiness check

Before a positive final state, verify all ten:

  1. target and capability/version identity are explicit;
  2. budgets were declared separately from observed values;
  3. format/version and required/used extensions are visible;
  4. units, coordinate convention, and transform checks are present;
  5. material behavior is not inferred from a beauty render alone;
  6. downstream and round-trip checks are separate;
  7. quality delta is evaluated against the project-specific threshold;
  8. unsupported features and known differences are disclosed;
  9. provenance is explicit;
  10. the final state is no stronger than the evidence.

A machine checker can test consistency. A human reviewer still owns acceptance of target suitability, known differences, and release authority.

Assessment and transfer

Passing evidence covers five layers:

  • Retrieval: explain why export success is not interoperability and name one adjacent non-goal.
  • Application: complete 3D Delivery Budget and Interoperability Validation Pack v1 for the baseline fixture.
  • Diagnosis: after triangle/texture budgets are halved, identify invalidated fields and a repair path.
  • Decision: do not force a positive state when a required extension is unsupported.
  • Transfer: rebuild the gates for an offline USD-centric film pipeline instead of copying the realtime-web budget.

Blocking misconception: “Blender exported it successfully and another program opened it, so interoperability is proven.” Accepting that statement without target-specific evidence fails the lesson.

The final lesson evidence is the pack, lab checks, known-difference/provenance record, and transfer decision. Together they define completion for this lesson; none alone authorizes release or proves interoperability beyond the declared target.

Build 3D Delivery Budget and Interoperability Validation Pack v1 from visible synthetic evidence.

  1. Read fixtures/baseline_observations.json; it is the clean reference for mutation comparison and contains no final verdict.
  2. Copy evidence/evidence_pack.template.json to a new file.
  3. Populate fields only from available evidence. Do not invent decisive values. Keep used_extensions, required_extensions, and target support separate, and record transform tolerance/reference/measured delta explicitly.
  4. Apply the published primary-state precedence in the lesson/evidence contract. If you use INTEROPERABLE_WITH_KNOWN_DIFFERENCES, every retained difference needs description, impact, acceptance_status=ACCEPTED, and an acceptance_ref.
  5. Choose final_state and write decision_rationale yourself.
  6. Run python run_checks.py evidence/<your-file>.json.
  7. Compare each mutation to the clean baseline using fixtures/FIXTURE_DELTA_MANIFEST.json: budget-half, unsupported-extension, and round-trip semantic drift. Do not copy the baseline verdict.
  8. For transfer/transfer_fixture.json, rebuild the gates for the offline USD-centric target.
